Mon. Oct. 22 2018
Travel day once again with these Hunters making their way back to Hunter Towers.
Detlef has been emptied and hopefully will get a bit of a clean and made ready for the colder months at some stage during the coming week.
We can now start planning the next trip!
Sat. and Sun. Oct. 20/21 2018
What a great weekend. It could not have been scripted better; perfect weather and great to be surrounded by family.
Saturday was full on with walks into town for shopping and lunch on the beach before returning again in the evening to a local restaurant for E’s birthday meal. Thanks to one and all for a great evening.
Sunday saw the clan on bikes, with the convoy moving along the coast to Thorpeness where those that had the energy spent most of the afternoon rowing on the lake.
Fri. Oct. 19 2018
We arrived in Aldeburgh at about 1.30 pm after the relatively short drive from Cambridge and were pitched and ready for the arrival of the clan throughout the afternoon and evening.
Thurs. Oct. 18 2018
E’s birthday today and it was travel day.
We set off from Bellingham in a total October white-out bound for the south and our over-night stop in Cambridge. The wonders of modern technology meant that there was a constant stream of birthday greetings during the journey and I am pleased to report that the weather also improved to give a brilliant sunny day.
We were lucky that the site in Cambridge was close to a public transport route and ventured into the city centre in the evening for a celebratory meal.
Weds. Oct. 17 2018
There are six published cycle routes around Bellingham and today we opted for the 17 mile “Curlew” circular route via the villages of Birtley and Wark.
The route took us along quite country roads and over open moorland full of sheep but getting close to them was another matter! The bikes made short work of the hills and the descents were reminiscent of the long ski schusses from a few years ago.
The village of Wark on the banks of the wide North Tyne River provided a welcome lunch stop at the Black Bull Hotel. Then it was back on the trusty steeds for the remainder of the ride made in brilliant sunshine and hardly any wind. What a change from Beal and Beadnell Bay!
It’s travel day tomorrow with a birthday to celebrate. We’re heading south again with an overnight stop near Cambridge.
Tues. Oct. 16 2018
The bike batteries were fully charged as we set off for the 50km round trip to Kielder Water today but we didn’t need to worry as, in fact, we returned to Bellingham having used only two thirds of their capacities.
The National Cycle Route 10 passes directly by our base here and we followed it through the very rural Northumbrian countryside to Falstone and on to the Visitor Centre at Kielder Water for lunch. According to Strava our elevation gain for the ride was 2,400 feet!
The highlight of the return leg was yours truly taking an unintended detour off Route 10 ending up deep in Kielder Forest before realising the hick-up! The moral of the story; use your eyes more!
The bikes have had a quick clean before being put to bed for the night. The wheels/spokes still had significant amounts of sea salt on them from the wet crossing to Holy Island last week!
Mon. Oct. 15 2018
A quick two hour “hop” today into the Northumberland National Park to Bellingham. There was even enough time to have a quick bike tour of the village and surrounding area before finding the Carriages Tearoom for a very welcome Cream Tea!
If the weather plays ball it will be off to Kielder Water tomorrow.
Sun. Oct. 14 2018
It proved to be a tad chilly on the bikes this morning as we once again explored the Beadnell Harbour area but decided against following the Northumberland coastal path south through the sand dunes.
We headed north instead and quickly reached Seahouses for a quick explore and a coffee stop. The Sunday golfers didn’t blink as we scorched by on our “Turbo” settings but the chill was getting to us and we decided to head back to base earlier than planned.
Remarkably the weather turned after lunch with the sun making a welcome appearance and with it a rise in the temperature. A change of clothing later we headed to the beach and once again made our way to Seahouses but this time on foot. What a good decision it proved to be with some wonderful scenery that a few hours earlier had remained hidden, shrouded in mist and low cloud. We even spotted a Heron looking for its next meal as we headed back.
It’s travel day tomorrow as we head to Bellingham in the Northumberland National Park.
Sat. Oct. 13 2018
Today was “Plan B” day as the forecast rain well and truly set in. The bus journey to Berwick Upon Tweed took the best part of an hour and took us on a tour of the villages along this stretch of the coastline although as you might expect the visibility was suspect to say the least. We were well prepared clothing wise and luckily didn’t get wet all day.
Despite the drab day we were quite impressed by the fortress town of Berwick with it’s mixture of architectural styles and rich military history. The town has also made the most of its link with the English artist LS Lowry who regularly visited until his death in 1976.
We spent most of the rain soaked day following in Lowry’s footsteps along the “Lowry Trail” – discovering the places where he stood to paint or sketch. Each site has a plaque with information about his work and we managed to find eight sites dotted on the north side of the River Tweed. Take a look in the latest photos gallery or follow the links below;

Time to chill back at base now and listen to the wind and rain lashing down!
Fri. Oct. 12 2018
We woke this morning as if on a roller coaster with Storm Callum well and truly at our door and in truth the high winds and at times driving rain haven’t stopped all day!
Today was travel day and despite Callum’s close attention we did manage a couple of hours at Bamburgh. The hugh car park opposite the castle looked quite odd with a handful of vehicles. Detlef looked quite small from the ramparts above but we were very grateful that the facility was there and didn’t cost a penny!
The castle is spectacular and as you would expect, dominates the landscape for miles around with views northwards to Holy Island and the Farne Islands to the east. The beaches here are very similar to the sandy expanses of Brittany and with today’s conditions the cobwebs were well and truly blown away!
The site here in Beadnell is still quite busy but most sensible people have been tucked away out of the wind. Those of us that aren’t sensible decided to walk to Beadnell Harbour and back and it was quickly apparent after a few hundred metres that a battle was looming. Hunters vs the Wind would have made an excellent headline.
As it turned out the outward leg to the harbour was the most taxing with bodies at times at a forty five degree angle into the oncoming wind. Standing still to take a couple of photos was a feat in itself!
The return leg, on the other hand, reminded me of the wind assisted return flight from New York to Heath Row in 2017 when we landed some fifty minutes early. Did we fly today!
So, it’s batten down the hatches for this evening. As I write rain is lashing down outside. The satellite TV dish is in the retracted position. The German “Krimi” will have to wait. Time to break out the Sloe Gin! Gute Nacht zusammen!!
Thurs. Oct. 11 2018
Our exposed position at the site here in Beal was emphasised overnight as the wind whistled all around. Not the best conditions for a good sleep!
The tide timetable for the day was in our favour showing a clear “dry” period for the causeway crossing to Holy Island between 09.00 and 14,30. Time enough for the bike ride, a good look round the island and to explore Lindisfarne Castle before heading back.
The skies were grey as we set off but the wet stuff quickly followed from above and stayed with us for the entire time on the island. To add insult to injury the “dry” causeway was still covered by water in many places and whilst this did not deter the car drivers both of us were soaked from the waist down within a few metres!
The trip to Holy Island village took about twenty five minutes. The advantage of using a bike quickly became apparent as we could access all areas whereas car drivers were forced to use a car park on the outside of the village.
Lindisfarne Castle was a highlight in the rain and on a better day we would have seen a lot more of the surrounding coastline from the ramparts. However, it was not a day for lingering and after a welcome coffee stop we made our way back along the causeway once again battling the “wet stuff” both from “above and below”.
It was a definite case of “Murphy” this afternoon as the sun made an appearance and it was a case of what might have been had it appeared earlier. Still, your’s truly used the improved light for a bit of long range photography.
We’re heading to the Barn Restaurant this evening and it’s off to Beadnell tomorrow.
Weds. Oct. 10 2018
It was inevitable that sooner or later we would wake to a typical October misty morning and so it was today. A pea souper!
The departure from Boroughbridge was delayed for as long as possible but once underway things brightened up and we arrived in Beal in brilliant sunshine.
I am delighted to report that we are the only “guests” in Beal and as such have the whole small site to ourselves. We were all set to go by 14.30. The bikes were made ready and we launched in the direction of Holy Island knowing full well that the tide was against us and so it proved. We were quite astounded at how fast the water marched towards us as we ventured along the causeway to Holy Island and quickly retreated inland for a 21 km circular tour on both sides of the A1. The ride this afternoon took us north along the coastline to Goswick and then inland to Cheswick and back to Beal
Let’s see what tomorrow brings as far as venturing along the causeway is concerned but it would appear we have a green light as far as the tide is concerned between 09.00 and 14,30 hours.
Tues. Oct. 9 2018
An early start was called for today and what a good decision it turned out to be.
The “Sat Nav” quickly relayed a ninety four minute delay on the A14 so there was only one real option – a diversion via Thetford and Peterborough to join the A1 at Stamford. The trip north to Boroughbridge was straight forward from this point on and we reached our “overnight” stop in the early afternoon. Time to chill.
Highlight of the day (so far) was following a lorry (carrying effluent) with the registration MR17 POO! Call me “sad” if you like!!
The journey to Beal tomorrow should be about three hours but there will be no rush as we are expected just after lunch.
Fri. Sept 7 2018
Waking to the sound of heavy rain was once again the order of the day and as yesterday we were able to make an early start on the trip to Calais.
All in all, we made good time today making an earlier tunnel crossing than the one booked. The M20/M25 behaved itself for once as well and we made it back to Hunter Towers just before 17.00 hrs.
The vast majority of the unpacking can wait until tomorrow when we’ll be less shattered!!
Thanks for your interest in this epic saga over the last fifty three days. In that time we managed to see 74 family members and friends. We’ve been into seven countries and covered just short of 2700 miles.
Detlef will be out and about soon with E, M and the girls whilst we’ll be off on another (much shorter) trip in October.
Thurs. Sept. 6 2018
We awoke this morning at 7 am to the unfamiliar sound of thunder followed by a huge downpour which fortunately only lasted for thirty odd minutes.
Just as well really as we were able to finish the packing in good time ready for the forage into Belgium with Leuven the destination.
Once again, the German roadworks campaign was in full swing with thirty minute delays around Aachen before we hit the bumpy Belgian motorways that could also do with some TLC!
The planned Leuven stop-over became a non-starter the second we set eyes upon what can only be described as a car park with no spaces/facilities for motor homes! So it was off to Rotselaar and what a gem we found.
There are only four spaces here but we were lucky to arrive in time to grab one of them and with full facilities who could ask for more!
The sports complex here reminds yours truly of Ferry Meadows in the UK with an extensive number of cycle routes surrounding the large lake. Pity we won’t be staying long enough to try them out.
So, it’s off to Calais tomorrow morning. Hopefully we’ll be able to sneak an earlier crossing!
Weds. Sept. 5 2018
The bikes were called into action this morning, possibly for the last time on this trip, as we made our 35 km round trip to Boppard on Rhein.
With W and H arriving back at base in the mid afternoon we just about had time for a quick coffee before heading back but the trip was well worth it with great views of the Rhein.
W and H duly arrived and a pleasant afternoon was spent by all.
Travel day tomorrow as we spend the next couple of days getting back to the UK.
Tues. Sept. 4 2018
We took the ferry across to St Goarshausen in the afternoon to meet K and the family.
The top of the Loreley rock has certainly changed since we were last here with the hotel complex having been replaced, albeit temporarily, by a building site! We’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out what will replace it.
We were still able to get to the Rhein viewing point, however with the view to our camp site. The concert area is much the same but the addition of a summer toboggan run has been one of the positive developments according to the locals.
The late afternoon was spent on a farm belonging to J’s in-laws and then it was off to Bornich to meet W and H. All this was made possible by O who very kindly ferried us around. Thanks guys once again!
Mon. Sept 3 2018
It’s incredible to think that we are into our last week before returning to the UK but here we are!
We headed south this morning along the west bank of the Rhein to Oberwesel and Bacharach. Yours truly had to refrain from calling the later “Bert” but you’ll have to be of a certain age to get the meaning!
I still find it amazing what can be packed into a strip of land between the rocks and the river. Not only is there an ample cycle way but also the train track, and a major road. Then of course, there’s the small matter of houses and shops.
All in all, we clocked another 23 miles there and back along the Rhein with always something to see. The constant flow of barges and passenger ships buzzing up and down provided great entertainment during the ride and it was back to base by 3.00 pm for a well earned rest.
Sun. Sept 2 2018
It was up early today for “last minute packing” before we set off to St. Goar.
The trip took a very acceptable ninety minutes with the luxury of no lorries on the Autobahn.
The site here is full but we were lucky to get a “second row” pitch with Rhein views directly opposite the Loreley Rock.
We were delighted to see so many of our friends for lunch and to reminisce about our previous visits to the Winzerfest in Bornich. Hopefully, we will have time to see them again before we leave for Belgium.
We still had time for a brisk walk into St.Goar in the evening to sample the local wine!
Sat. Sept. 1 2018
A great day for cycling today with sunshine and just the hint of a breeze.
From our base here we quickly made it to Gernsheim on Rhein and then followed the cycle route south along the river to the site of the atomic power station at Biblis.
The cycle paths in this part of the world are very good and our progress was rapid. We made it to Wattenheim (where we had had lunch earlier during the week) and then turned for home.
The obligatory “Curry Wurst” was once again eaten at the Rhein-side kiosk in Gernsheim before heading back inland to our base here in Hahn.
It’s been full on this afternoon getting sorted and packed for our travel day tomorrow when we will move up the Rhein to St. Goar.
Thurs./Fri. Aug 30/31 2018
A quiet couple of days here at Hahn Towers. We’ve been raiding the local shops for provisions as well as sampling the delights of Golf Club restaurants. Today it was the turn of Golfpark Bachgrund Büttelborn-Worfelden.
We’ve also had a minor problem with a rear light on one of the E Bikes. Hopefully the temporary repair will hold until we get back to Blighty.
Weds. Aug 29 2018
It was a day to be the passenger as E took us on a tour in the car into the Odenwald and then to the Golf Club in Biblis-Wattenheim for lunch.
https://www.golf-absolute.de/biblis-wattenheim/en/
We dusted off the E Bikes this afternoon for a 10 km explore, just making it back before the rain.
Tues. Aug 28 2018
A morning of running around here getting various things sorted.
A cupboard door in Detlef decided to play up in Austria and it’s been a search in the local Baumarkt to find suitable materials to fill enlarged screw holes that won’t hold the screws any more.
Hopefully the solution has been found and we’re now waiting for the glue to dry before attempting to reattach the hinges!
The weather today has been better than yesterday; in fact it is quite warm again.
Mon. Aug 27 2018
The alarm went off at 03.00 this morning for us to say “bye bye” to M and family as they made their way to Frankfurt Hahn for their flight back to the UK. Needless to say, getting back to sleep wasn’t that easy and we had to do it all over again as E and family left at 09.30 for their drive back.
The house here seemed very empty afterwards as the decibel levels dropped and the rest of the day was spent “getting sorted”.
We’re pleased to report that everyone made it back OK ready for work and school in the coming days whilst some of us don’t have to worry about either! Oh to be retired!!
Sun. Aug 26 2018
A family day out today with a visit to Burg Frankenstein in the morning and a trip to Gernsheim on Rhein in the afternoon.
Sat. Aug 25 2018
Travel day today and a trip that should have taken around six hours took almost eight. Once again, roadworks and accidents caused delays and we arrived at our destination around 17.00.
M and family were already settled in having arrived before midday from the UK whilst E and family managed the same trip as us taking an hour an a half less.
Fri. Aug 24 2018
Arguably the worst scenario for pack up day today as we had constant overnight rain with more forecast today.
The awning and associated “bits” were well and truly wet when we took them down and they will need to be thoroughly dried out when we have some sunshine again. In addition, the inflatable awning seems to have a failed joint and will have to be repaired when we get back to home base.
The rest of today has been spent “hanging round” as we anticipate tomorrow’s trip north to Hahn.
Thurs. Aug 23 2018
It was off to the Eibsee at the foot of the Zugspitze this morning.
The views of the cable car on its way to the summit brought back memories of a few days earlier when the crew braved the ride to the top but on this occasion we could look on as the car made its way to the distant peak.
The Eibsee at ground level was much as we remembered when we looked on from above; the light green colours brightening up an unusually overcast morning. A brief walk along the lakeside gave way to the hire of a pedal boat as we were treated to an hour of fun being “driven” in the rear seats watching the gorgeous scenery slowly drift by. Thanks to M and E for the super human effort in providing the horse power and for H and J for their steering skills although it must be said that at times yours truly thought we were on a U Boat avoidance course!
It was then off to Garmisch in the early afternoon but our tour was cut short as the skies began to rumble with thunder. We just made it back to the car in time as the heavens opened.
We managed to get back to base before the storm hit us for a second time. All in all we remained relatively dry (unlike at the Plansee) and we now have to keep fingers crossed that we dry out before trying to put the awning away tomorrow morning. Time will tell.
Weds. Aug 22 2018
A morning “chill” was called for after the trials of yesterday with an afternoon trip planned to Leutasch to visit the famous Leutascher Geisterklamm (Ghost Gorge).
We weren’t disappointed as we slowly made our way along the specially constructed walkway with its spectacular views. The trolls were well hidden today but we did get a glimpse of one in his cave whilst others had left their wooden huts for the day. Where they had gone was anyone’s guess.
After Leutasch it was off to Mittenwald for tea and then back to base. It’s a tough life touring!
Tues. Aug 21 2018
Family S ventured to the Grubsee today for some water fun whilst E and I decided to take the E Bikes for a spin firstly to Wallgau and then south to Mittenwald.
In total we managed some nineteen miles across some interesting gradients before returning to base camp at Tennsee.
Mon. Aug 20 2018
Today saw the crew undertaking the “three country tour” as we left the site here in Germany at 10.00 am heading into Austria and Italy.
Our destination was Vipiteno in the Süd Tirol (Italy). We made good time along the excellent Brenner Autobahn and arrived in the picturesque village before lunchtime! Whilst officially this region belongs to Italy you wouldn’t really know it as the German language is everywhere. Very convenient for us!
Lunch in Vipiteno was followed by a flying visit to Innsbruck in the afternoon where the “Golden Roof” was the centre of attraction as well as the River Inn.
The exhausted crew returned to base in the late afternoon to a well earned round of refreshments.
Sun. Aug 19 2018
Unsurprisingly it was a late wake up this morning as the toils of the previous day’s set up caught up with us.
The bikes and crew were, however, ready to roll by 10.15 am and we made our way along the superb cycle ways to Wallgau and later to Krün. It must be said that the younger crew members did exceptionally well negotiating the undulating features of the surrounding countryside and well deserved their refreshment at the adventure playground in Krün.
A quick diversion on the return journey took us to check out the Grubsee for a future day and it remains to be seen whether it will feature in future plans for the week.
M and E decided to try out the E Bikes in the afternoon having been exposed by the sheer power during the morning ride whilst the girls were once again lured by the thought of dam making in the on-site stream. Happy days!
Sat. Aug 18 2018
An early rise was the name of the game this morning as we completed our last minute jobs before the short journey back into Germany to the Tennsee.
First impressions of the camp site are very favourable. We managed to get set by 13.00 and explored the site for the first part of the afternoon. Then it was off shopping to stock up for the week.
The area is well set up for cycling and no doubt the bikes will be making lots of appearances this week.
Fri. Aug 17 2018
After the hectic day before, today was a part “chill” and part packing up day.
M, H and J decided to try canoeing for the morning and part of the afternoon and very successful they were too.
The afternoon was spent breaking camp ready for the trip to Tennsee tomorrow.
Thurs. Aug 16 2018
A very busy day today as we set off early for the trip into Germany and the Zugspitze summit.
It was to be the day of “the queue” – hardly surprising as it was a beautifully clear day.
We managed to find a parking space at the main railway station in Garmisch and queued for over an hour to take the Zugspitzebahn right to the base of the cable car. Another three quarter of an hour queue eventually saw us get the cable car to the summit (2950m).
The views at the top were stunning. No wonder there were so many people. We eventually forced ourselves to leave the summit area and took the newly constructed train route down, partially through the mountain and back to Garmisch.
Thanks to M, E, H and J for such a memorable day.
Wed. Aug 15 2018
M disappeared early in his car with bike firmly on the roof rack and appeared a half an hour later minus the car which he had left at the far end of the Plansee.
The task for today was to get the troops to the car again in the shortest time possible.
The hiking poles were dusted off and walking boots readied for the trek which was completed by three o’clock in the afternoon and some six miles later. The girls did remarkably well and enjoyed their ice cream treat at the Seespitz Restaurant at the end.
We met so many walkers and mountain bikers on route. “Servus” and Grüss Gott” rolled off the lips with every meeting as we edged further to our destination.
A highlight was crossing the bridge across the channel between the Plannsee and Heiterwanger See with our destination so close.
The tired troops are now fed and watered and ready for an early night!
Tue. Aug 14 2018
Showers were still evident throughout the morning and housekeeping kept the team busy.
The afternoon was spent over the border at the delightful village of Oberammergau and later at Schloss Linderhof.
Mon. Aug 13 2018
A relaxing morning by the lake was called for as certain team members braved the cool water temperature to venture into the Plansee.
Lunch was followed by our first cycle ride as we tried to get some activity in before the forecast downpour occurred. In the end we weren’t disappointed as we just managed to get back to base before the storm hit.
We hadn’t reckoned with the amount of water that was to fall and it was all hands to the pumps as the awning was partially flooded from below and the water rose through the carpet!
Luckily the storm passed us by relatively quickly and we returned from shopping in Reutte to an awning that had “drained away” to some extent. Let us hope the sun shines tomorrow to dry us out.
Sun. Aug 12 2018
With S’s arriving in the late afternoon we took the opportunity to role out the E Bikes once again.
A quick uphill climb to the Ammerwald revealed a completely new hotel from the one that stood there some thirty years ago! Then it was back down the valley and along the lakeside to the Seespitz Site for lunch.
S’s duly arrived just before 5pm and it was off to the Musteralpe for a meal before the unpacking was attempted. An early night was the name of the game after such a long drive from La Rochelle/Dijon.
Sat. Aug 11 2018
Yours truly had convinced himself last night that it would be a good idea to have an extra hour in bed this morning but I had not reckoned with the local Forestry workers who decided to start their chain saws at the unearthly hour of 7 am.
Any thoughts I had were dispelled at that moment and the lie-in turned into an early breakfast as we decided to put the E Bikes to the test with their first serious mountain outing.
The challenge was to reach Griesen in Germany by following the stony mountain pathways from the Plansee and along the course of the River Naidernach, a round trip of 22km and a height difference of about 250 meters.
We needn’t have worried as the “turbo” made light work of the return climbs and in retrospect the descent into Griesen with all the braking on the stony surface was more difficult. The Coffee and Apfelstudel in the village was very welcome!
This afternoon has been spent by the lakeside watching the diving school putting pupils through their paces and we now await the arrival of E, M, H and J for the next stage of their holiday.
Hopefully we can get that extra hour in bed tomorrow – after all it is Sunday!
Fri. Aug 10 2018
It rained non-stop here until about midday. Quite a contrast from a few days ago with blazing sunshine and temperatures around 44 degrees in the Frankfurt area.
Once the rain stopped it was time to put the awning and pod out and I can now report success albeit getting slightly damp as the showers decided to return off and on for the latter part of the afternoon.

No need to go to the gym today as Mr and Mrs toiled to beat the stony ground. We are just glad we bought the steel tent pegs in the New Forest last year!
All-in-all a good day’s work and there was a treat at the end of the day with “Curry Wurst mit Pommes” from the local kiosk here on site followed by a quick walk to the reception to get cycle route information.
Sun. Aug 5 – Thurs. Aug 9 2018
The last five days have just flown by and yours truly can hardly keep up with recording all that’s happened on the journey south.
We departed South Hessen on Sun. 5 Aug and headed to meet J and B in Kirchberg/Jagst. It was great to see them again along with M and H. How time flies. Strange to think M was about nine when I last saw her!
Thanks for the hospitality and all the favours guys! We really enjoyed our visit to Dinkelsbühl on Monday and our visit to the local Greek restaurant.
Tuesday saw us head further south to meet M and U in Westerheim and once again we were royally entertained. Wednesday saw us head into the beautiful city of Ulm on the River Danube.
Today we made an early start arriving unannounced at the Dethleffs service centre in Isny at 09.30. What a place and what fantastic service. There were no questions and no problems as we were able to get our bathroom door catch repaired and we were on our way again by 14.00.
We arrived here at the Plansee at 15.30 and were all set and pitched by 17.00. It just remains to get the awning out tomorrow but we’ve had rain and thunderstorms this evening so we’ll have to wait and see how the land lies first thing in the morning.
Sat. Aug 4 2018
The heat hasn’t abated so it’s a rest day today with a bit of local shopping and catching up with the photos.
Time for a coffee at the Gernsheimer Golf Club.
Fri. Aug 3 2018
Travel day to Pfungstadt via Altmorschen to pick up provisions for E.
We couldn’t believe our eyes on the way as the outside temperature reached 44 degrees Celsius and yours truly is completely soaked as I’m writing this. Time to jump into the shower.
Pfungstadt has certainly changed since we were here last year with a lot of building having taken place. E very kindly drove us around in his new SUV and I can confirm that the air conditioning works wonderfully!
There are a few jobs to do tomorrow before we once again head south to Kirchberg on Sunday.
Thurs. Aug 2 2018
We only wanted to see when the local restaurant opened in the village but we ended up in Rengshausen, some 15 km from our site and ended up visiting C and W who we had not seen for quite a while.
Once again the E bikes showed their versatility with on problems on the various climbs on the way. It was a pity that J and U weren’t at home when we dropped in on the way back but that’s what you get when you turn up unannounced!
A warm evening was spent with G and K before we started packing for the trip south.
Weds. Aug 1 2018
I can’t believe it is the first of the month today. The heat is unrelenting still.
As luck would have it we ventured to Kassel on the best air-conditioned train one could have wished for. The afternoon was spent with cousin R whilst yours truly managed a sneaky trip with F and B to the DEZ shopping centre. You’ll have to guess what I bought but J in Denmark will know immediately! Thanks J for the tip!
We were once again lucky to find such a great restaurant in Bergshausen and thanks to R, C, F and B for a great evening.
Tues. July 31 2018
A later start today following the excesses of the previous evening.
The bikes were still “turbo” hot as we made our way in the later morning heat to Melsungen to visit W. We managed to stop off at the local Motor Home dealer who advised about our broken magnetic bathroom door catch.
As a result of our chat we’ve decided to make a slight detour on our way into Austria to visit the Dethleffs main service centre in Isny. Hopefully it can be sorted there but yet again it’s not pressing – just annoying!
Having biked back to the site it was a quick shower and change as we were picked up by J and S and taken back to Melsungen for an evening meal in the local Pizzeria.
Mon. July 30 2018.
We were joined for breakfast today by F and B who stayed overnight in their Hymer after the cousins’ event yesterday.
The bikes were called into action once again as we headed off to Morschen in the afternoon to visit I and H. It was great to get out of the heat for once as we disappeared into the depths of their house and thanks to their kind invitation, we now have a place to park Detlef when we visit Morschen in the future. Thanks.
It’s amazing what B Braun (suppliers of medical equipment) have done for this region of North Hessen as a quick tour around the Kloster Haydau quickly proved. It’s hard to imagine what would happen if the company ceased to exist.
The E Bike ride back to our base seemed to fly as the “turbo” setting was engaged and the evening was spent with J, S and C.
Sun. July 29 2018
We were up at the crack of dawn to get ready for the cousins’ “event” both on site here and on the River Fulda in Melsungen where we were to meet for the two hour float trip.
We were not disappointed and everything came together as the full complement of twenty two people descended on the landing stage in Melsungen for the early afternoon “voyage”. It was incredible to think that some of the cousins had not seen one another for fifty years!
The very low water levels in the Fulda meant that we were unable to undertake the normal route but it didn’t seem to matter as we were slowly navigated along the river by a very able crew.
It was then back to the site here for a bite off the grill and a welcome drink. A lot of catching up was the order of the day. Very enjoyable.
Sat. July 28 2018
Something has got to give today or so yours truly summised! It was overcast for large periods and thunder storms were forecast.
J very kindly drove us into Malsfeld to get the drinks for the cousins’ grill party tomorrow when we expect over twenty people to arrive on site.
Yours truly spent more time than I would like to trying to catch up on the blog but the mobile phone reception is very poor here and frustration has set it. In view of the weather forecast we decided to stay put and relax on site today.
Fri. July 27 2018
We awoke to brilliant sunshine on our lakeside pitch and after a quick walk to the bakers enjoyed an alfresco breakfast next to Detlef. Happy days.
The bikes were later dusted off as we headed into Malsfeld to find an Edeka shop. The cycle routes here are also excellent and on the way we took the opportunity of finding the railway station trying to prepare a train trip into Kassel sometime next week.
The afternoon saw us head south to Morschen where we visited old acquaintances and E’s family house. It was good to know that the vet who bought the property has done so much and that it appears to be in good hands.
Having seen reports on German TV about the Märchenschmiede in Neumorschen, E was keen to pay a visit before we headed back to the camp site.
J, S and C joined us for a beer in the local watering hole later where we put the world (and the locals) to right.
Can it get any hotter? JH in Neumorschen recorded 61 degrees in the direct sunshine on his balcony this afternoon!
Thurs. July 26 2018
We took our leave from Lilienthal around 10.30 am and made our way south along the A7 into Hessen. Once again, roadworks were the order of the day and with them the extra concentration needed in the narrow lanes.
A quick coffee stop in Melsungen at G and K’s was most welcome as we eventually arrived in Beiseförth at 4.30 pm.
It was good to see J and S again with J very kindly making sure all was OK at the riverside camp site. We were also lucky to meet a very helpful German couple who showed us the ropes. We’ve now set up for a week here and it was great of J and S to offer a meal in the evening. C was also invited and a pleasant evening was had by all.
Weds. July 25 2018
We were standing at the Strassenbahn stop dead on 10.00 am for the twenty five minute trip into the City Centre. What a fantastic system they have here with the cars and Strassenbahn vehicles freely mixing and somehow managing to avoid one another.
A tourist guide umbrella was the only accessory that H failed to take with her as we followed her lead for the rest of the morning. On occasion we lost sight of her as she dashed ahead but we managed to keep track as we made our way around the city centre sights and shops.
We returned to Lilienthal at around 2.00 pm before taking the bikes for a spin back into Bremen in search of E’s cousin. Once again we were expertly guided by H as we weaved our way along the bicycle routes to the Summer House by the Weser.
What a lovely place that was with its river views. It was amazing to see so much happening on the river in the short time we were there. Thanks to H and U for a great afternoon/evening.
We made it back to Lilienthal just before it got dark but we need not have worried. The lights on the bikes performed really well.
Tues. July 24 2018
It was an unusual but nevertheless welcome feeling to be driven as we made our way along the Autobahn to Bremerhaven this morning. The difference in driving speed between Detlef and an ordinary car was there for everyone to see!
The 8 Degrees East Climate Exhibition at the Havenwelten was very thought provoking as one ventured right across the globe in all extremes of temperature.
Then it was off to the Fischerhaven for lunch and a quick visit to the fish merchant for the obligatory kilo of smoked sprats ready for tea later.
We were pleased with the day but it was good to get back to Lilienthal and out of the blistering heat. Off to Bremen tomorrow.
Mon. July 23 2018
Travel day. We could’t believe that it was overcast when we woke but the cloud quickly disappeared to give us another great day.
We were packed and ready to go by 10.30. A quick stop for fuel at the Co-Op and we were on our way back into Germany. The journey was a bit smoother than the previous week with no major hold ups.
We arrived in Lilienthal just after 4.00 pm and will be staying until Thursday. Detlef is currently resting at a nearby farm while we are once again being royally treated by H.
It’s off to the Climate Museum 8 Degrees East in Bremerhaven tomorrow.
Sun. Juiy 22 2018
Another brilliant day weather wise. The harbour area was again the focus of attention with a leisurely walk and a good look at the motor home area. It would have been good to park so close to the action but you could not have guaranteed a place and in the end the Strand Camping was the better alternative.
H and N ventured to visit in the early afternoon and we spent the rest of the day with the family. All in all a great weekend.
Sat. July 21 2018
This was the family afternoon and evening with everyone descending on Juelsminde from various parts of Denmark.
In the morning we took the opportunity to well and truly initiate the E Bikes with a 32km ride to Snaptun along some excellent cycle paths adjacent to the main road. Oh for that luxury in the UK!!
It was a pleasure to see everyone again and the rest of the day was spent eating, drinking and chatting and generally catching up. Thanks to J, H, N, L, S, A, C, C, A, E for a great time and we hope to reciprocate in the UK sooner than later!
Needless to say we collapsed into bed after a thoroughly enjoyable day!
Fri. July 20 2018
We ended up in prison this morning and it has to be said that the two hours spent in the Horsens Prison Museum were thought provoking to say the least! This was certainly a first and I am struggling to think of any comparable museum in the UK.
Lunch in Horsens main thoroughfare was followed by a relaxing afternoon catching up with J, H, L and N. We made our way back to base in the late evening having been totally spoilt!! We need not eat and drink for the next week!
Thurs. July 19 2018
Yours truly was hoping for a trouble-free final leg to Denmark but once again the inevitable “Baustelle” slowed us down. The 234 miles took almost six hours.
Hamburg was interesting. The port area looked very big indeed from where we were and a dedicated stay might be on the cards in the future.
The Strand Camping site here in Juelsminde is (as you would expect at this time of year) full to the seems. The staff were very helpful on our arrival and first impressions are extremely favourable. The site is right next to the harbour and marina and is a magnet for young and old.
It was great to see J, H and N again and you would not have a realised that a couple of years have passed since we last met. Thanks guys for a wonderful evening and we look forward to our Horsens Prison Museum visit tomorrow!
Weds. July 18 2018.
Wow, that was a good night’s sleep. The time spent last night in the local watering hole certainly helped!
It has been wall-to-wall sunshine so far today and we had hoped for a “shortish” hop to Ottersberg, near Bremen (197 miles) but alas we had not reckoned with the never ending number of roadworks and the inevitable delays that go with them.
The drive lasted just short of five hours today taking us via Duisburg, Gladbeck, Marl and then on to Muenster, Osnabrueck and Stuhr. We’ve landed just outside Ottersberg in a Stellplatz taking (I guess) a maximum of eight vehicles. As I write there are two motor homes (us included) here.
We’ve taken advantage of the electric hook-up today and at 1 Euro for eight hours, who can complain! Time to charge the batteries!
The final “hop” into Denmark for tomorrow should be a five hour drive but in view of today’s experience I think an earlier leave is called for. 08.00 am it is then. All being well we should arrive around 2.00 pm!
Tues. July 17 2018
We’ve all experienced it haven’t we? An early departure. The alarm is set for some ridiculous hour and it only seems seconds ago that you closed your eyes and went to sleep. And so it was this morning at 03.10.
The previous days of preparation enabled us to make a relatively smooth get away at 04.30 but the sound of Detlef’s engine piercing the silence still haunts me. What did the neighbours think?
Yours truly always manages to take the wrong turning when leaving the M20 at Ashford for fuel and so it was today but we made the Channel Tunnel in good time. We had hoped for an earlier crossing but alas that was not to be so yours truly took full advantage and managed forty winks in the back of Delef.
We arrived in Calais at noon and made it to Wachtendonk at 16.40 travelling via Gent, Antwerp, Eindhoven and Venlo. A good journey but tiring given the early start.
The Stellplatz here for motor homes is good. There are four vehicles here with another sixteen places vacant. We thought Detlef was on the large side but in comparison with our nearest neighbour it seems rather small now!

This evening has seen us exploring in the town centre and meeting the locals over a glass of beer. Tomorrow sees us head north east for our second over-night stop somewhere between Bremen and Hamburg.
Mon. July 16 2018
Almost there with the preparation for “Le Tour” and it’s getting quite hectic at Hunter Towers!
The good news is that the E Bikes finally arrived at the weekend but the bad news is that one will have to go back to the dealer today for a quick “tweak” – your truly at the helm. Better the problem was discovered before setting off! Time to try the “turbo” mode!!
Vehicle weight has been upper-most on the agenda during the past few days so much so that we managed a trial run on the packing front before going to the local weighbridge. Overall we are well within the total weight limit but the rear axle is fast approaching the limit so it’s been a case of moving items forward. The joys of a motor home!
So, it’s first stop Channel Tunnel and then through France, Belgium and Holland into Germany for the first over-night stop. There is another planned over-night stop near Hamburg before reaching our Danish destination.
Watch this space for updates as the story unfolds.
Mon. June 25 2018
With the hard “packing away” work done last evening today’s travel day was quite relaxed.
We duly arrived back at Hunter Towers just before lunchtime. Some two hours later Detlef was once again ready for the off. This week we have to visit our local dealer for a “recall” but it would appear that it will only take an hour!
Fri. June 22 to Sun. June 24 2018
What a fantastic weekend. Great company and brilliant weather made this a memorable few days and a bit like the cycle race last week was over all too quickly.
The girls were on their bikes within a few minutes of their arrival exploring the site but we had to wait until Saturday for E’s and J’s arrival due to illness! The latter did well despite feeling poorly and if her Sunday smiles are anything to go by she is well on the way to recovery.
The swimming pool was a great attraction all weekend with the high temperatures as was the site kiosk with it’s supply of refreshing ice lollies and ice cream.
Special thanks are due to all those involved in providing the food with M and M taking turns to rustle up the breakfasts for the hungry campers. Bacon and egg baps are becoming legendary!
Hopefully, this type of weekend will be repeated more often. Looks like the next one will be in October when we are all scheduled to be in A.
Thanks team H and S.
Thurs. June 21 2018
A quick hop over to Thetford this morning to set up for the weekend. Mission achieved. Thanks to Suzanne and Mark for the help.
Weds. June 13 2018
A brisk morning walk to see Brundish church was achieved before the Tour rolled by.
Lesley and Mario had kindly opened the pub an hour or so before zero hour so we joined other villagers for a liquid lunch and a seat outside to watch the race.
It was all over too quickly and we made it back to Hunter Towers by mid afternoon. Time to clean Detlef.
Tues. June 12 2018
The “leave routine” continues to be refined and perfected and so it was again this morning.
We left Bladon for Brundish at 11 am and arrived at 3.00 pm.
Is it me, or are fuel prices rising? A fill up of the diesel tank outside Oxford prompted a second mortgage application, or so it seemed. The shock must have thrown the brain into some confusion as I didn’t even notice that the Sat Nav was directing us along the M40 onto the M25. I needn’t have worried as all was flowing well apart from on the counter-clockwise carriageway. It appeared that the speed cameras were having a field day in the road works as every fourth or fifth car was being blitzed. How long before some people actually understand how an average speed camera system works?
Brundish on the other hand is as quiet as it gets. We’ve now parked up in our VIP pole position spot to watch the Womens’ Tour Cycle Race whistle by tomorrow at around 1 pm. It’s not quite the Tour de France but hey ho! Pity it only takes ten seconds for the riders to pass us! Still, with luck we might just catch the highlights tomorrow night on TV back at Hunter Towers.
Mon. June 11 2018
We hit the centre of Oxford at 10.30 am having bused into the city from Bladon. The next four and a half hours saw us clocking up 12 km on foot as we manoeuvred our way around the sights and the mass of humanity that had the same intention as our good selves.
If anything, it was too hot for sight seeing but we nevertheless accepted the challenge firstly taking in Christ Church and Chist Church Meadow before heading along High Street to Magdalen College and the River Cherwell.
Arguably the Radcliffe Camera is the most iconic architectural feature in Oxford and judging by the huge number of people milling around the building it must be true. Together with The Bridge of Sighs it is well worth a visit.
Lunch was followed by a sprint around Oxford Colleges too numerous to mention by name and it was somewhat of a relief to be sitting on the bus for the return trip back to the site at 3.30 pm
Needless to say, we sank into the comfortable chairs for the remainder of the day.
It’s travel day tomorrow as we head back to Suffolk but not back to Hunter Towers. Instead, we are laying up in anticipation that the UK Women’s Cycle Tour will pass by at lunchtime on Wednesday.
Sun. June 10 2018
We were greeted by a grey sky at the start of our circular bike tour around Kidlington today but we needn’t have worried as the sun quickly made a mid-morning appearance and stayed with us for the rest of the day.
The 28 km round trip was well worth it taking us along side the A44 before cutting through the centre of Kidlington and heading out to the A34. The route was a mixture of cycle ways/paths and minor roads and all very flat!!
Yours truly once again disgraced himself by falling off the bike having tried to start off in a ridiculously too high gear. Given that this was the third time in as many weeks it is no wonder that the stewards will be looking into possible causes!!
Unperturbed by the misfortune we carried on edging towards the northern suburbs of Oxford and despite going past Wolvercote Cemetery didn’t really have the time to look for JRR Tolkien’s grave (he of The Hobbit fame)!
Our journey was made even more interesting by our constant flirting with the Oxford Canal and the numerous long boats either moored along the tow path or being navigated through the many locks by their Sunday captains.
Woodstock was once again the venue for Sunday lunch before we made our way back on site for a well deserved Sunday snooze and relax.
Tomorrow’s plan is to venture into Oxford although I have my doubts we will catch a glimpse of Morse!!
Sat. June 9 2018
Travel day today but with the relatively short distance to Bladon we had the luxury of a late start.
The site here is a lot smaller than Moreton and we were lucky to get the only remaining hardstanding pitch.
The bikes were readied after lunch for the short ride to St Martin’s Church in Bladon to see Winston Churchill’s grave and afterwards to the village of Woodstock and Blenheim Palace.
Fri. June 8 2018
An early alarm call today to catch the first bus from Moreton-in-Marsh to Stratford Upon Avon. The ninety minute trip took us through a variety of interesting Cotswold villages before hitting Shakespeare’s Stratford.
The next four and a half hours saw us take in the obligatory sites including his birthplace and grave. What would Shakespeare have made of it all if he were alive today?
The return trip to Moreton saw the bus take a slightly different route which included stretches of the Womens’ Cycle Tour to be held next week . It will be interesting to watch the TV coverage and see where we were.
The day was completed with Pizza alfresco washed down with a tasty glass of red wine. Travel day is tomorrow.
Thurs. June 7 2018
Wir haben es geahnt!
The bus passes were quickly dusted off this morning as the previous evening’s prophecy came to pass and off we went to catch the bus to Bourton on the Water.
Unfortunately the day was overcast but a trip along the Fosse Way to Bourton via Stow on the Wold was well worth it with the colour of the yellow oolitic Jurassic limestone shining through the grey day like a distant sun in a far off galaxy.
Bourton was buzzing today with the Nikon cameras in constant action. The whole village was alive with the sound of the various cash tills opening and closing as the hoards promenaded up and down.
How big is your ice cream? How was your cream tea? But it had to be done. They are only here for one day, or maybe two. Where do they all live? What time is the coach picking up?
Then back to Moreton in Marsh. What a crazy time to take the bus. School is just finishing and from the Sea of Tranquility we end up captives in a loud, juvenile tube that is the bus. Getting off was a release from that temporary prison. Pleased that we have left that world behind. Bliss.
Now back at “Base” we plan our next forage. Off to Stratford upon Avon me thinks. Watch this space.
Weds. June 6 2018
We arrived in Moreton-in-Marsh at 1.00pm after a four hour journey via the A14 and M6 before heading south into the Cotswolds. It has to be said that a shorter journey time was anticipated but the speed restrictions between Cambridge and Huntingdon took their toll but what can you do?
The first job on route was to seek out some LPG gas. It never ceases to amaze me how sloooooow the gas pumps are and not even the friendly member of staff could make the process quicker. Still what’s another half an hour added to the journey time? However, judging by the gas pressure surge when the system was turned on it would appear that we have a full tank!
The site here in Moreton is just outside the town and well situated for walking to the shops, restaurants and pubs. Pitching was effortless today. It does help to have a flat surface in the first place but “chocking” the rear wheels before taking the foot off the brake seems to have stopped the very slight movement off the front wheel chocks.
The obligatory “recky” into town was carried out during the afternoon along the surprisingly wide main street and then it was into the Bell Inn beer garden for refreshment before returning to the site.
The local information guide points out that the towns original name was Moreton Henmarsh – meaning founded on moorland that wild birds nested on. It also claims that King Charles I stayed at the White Hart Royal Hotel during the English Civil War even apparently failing to pay his bill. No such luck for the Hunters today!
Rain is forecast for tomorrow so the bus passes have already been prepared. Watch this space to see how things unfold.
Tue. May 22 2018
Travel day today.
Mon. May 21 2018
What a fantastic week of good weather. Today was no different as we began and ended the day in brilliant sunshine. The pull out awning even made an appearance which says it all.
A very relaxed morning was followed by our final bike trip to Wolferton Village, perhaps best known for its Royal Train Station, used up until 1966 to bring the Royals to Sandringham. The railway line ceased to function in 1969 but the former station has been restored and is well worth a visit.
A quick circuit of the village and a visit to the local church was made before we headed off back to the Sandringham Visitors Centre for a spot of refreshment. Then it was back to base and the first stage of packing ready from our return home tomorrow.
Sun. May 20 2018
Sunshine all day today. It was hard to believe that this was the first time we had eaten breakfast outside since the Brittany trip last summer. Such is the British climate!
After a lazy morning we set off across country on the bikes heading towards Great Bircham and Bircham Mill. The 17 mile round trip was made on a mixture of normal roads and farm tracks, the latter being extremely “bumpy” on occasion.
There is something special about a windmill standing proud against a clear sky and so it was today as we approached Great Bircham. The fields around were full of “pigs camping” as a certain young man would say but they were too busy eating to worry about the two cyclists battling through the clouds of dust on their way for an afternoon cream tea!
Although we both had padded cycling shorts on, we were certainly glad to see the camp site again at the end of the ride! Then it was “beers all round” and a well deserved soft captain’s chair!
Sat. May 19 2018
Today was travel day as we made the two hour journey across the Fens to the Sandringham Estate.
“Olle” the elusive Grafham owl finally made an appearance as yours truly was in the shower but he did stay long enough for me to get a few shots with the long lens albeit with eyes closed most of the time! He’d obviously had a hard night hunting!
Pitching at the Sandringham site proved interesting with yours truly going over the front wheel levelling chocks for the first time! Thankfully there was no apparent damage and we live to fight another day!
It is always great to meet other people on site. This was true at Grafham and this afternoon we were approached by Karen and James interested in the Dethleffs A Class Motorhome. Hopefully we haven’t put them off in their search!
The bikes were once again pressed into action in the late afternoon as we raced to the Sandringham Estate Visitors Centre for a quick coffee and to see the remaining street party revellers celebrating the Royal wedding.
Given the occasion, it was somehow fitting to visit Sandringham Parish Church where the Royal Family attend on Christmas Day.
We were treated to a welcome glass of red wine by Karen and James on our return ride back to the site and a quick trial on James’ e-bike confirmed that we can’t really wait for the delivery of our own.
Fri. May 18 2018
More of the same today around Grafham Water with stops to look at the Grafham Triathalon finish area for this coming Sunday and a welcome watering stop at the Wheatsheaf in East Perry.
The midges were out in force as we made our way around the lake and at times it felt like riding through rain. Lucky that we were both wearing sunglasses!
The afternoon was spent chilling on site and with new neighbours to chat with the day has flown by. Travel day is tomorrow.
Thur. May 17 2018
As is often the case with the weather here, we woke to a completely different day from the cold and breezy conditions of yesterday. Pure sunshine was on the menu today.
We set off for Perry at around 11 am with the aim of having lunch around the Grafham Water Centre. The clockwise direction of travel took us to the G W Vistors’ Centre then along the dam wall. It wasn’t long before we rolled into Perry and eventually found our lunch destination with superb views over the lake.
The second half of the ride was physically more challenging but we made good time and made it back to the start point having taken an hour and forty five minutes.
Needless to say, the afternoon has been spent relaxing on site with the reclining chairs making their debut for 2018. Yours truly has been behind the long lens all afternoon hoping to get a glimpse of “Ollie” the owl but as yet without success.
Tomorrow promises to be warmer than today and no doubt the bikes will make another appearance.
Wed. May 16 2018
With today’s destination (Grafham) only two hours away and arrival time no earlier than 13.00 it was a late, relaxed start for yours truly.
It was a pity that the warm weather of yesterday didn’t appear again today but we survived the windy driving conditions to make an appearance at Grafham at around 13.15.
The site here is relatively small and compact and quite surprisingly full. The focus is on an old cottage, the origins of which can be traced to the family of Oliver Cromwell. Parts of the original moats are still visible!
Pitching proved interesting as we took two attempts to find a clear facing south easterly pitch for the Sat TV to work without problems.
The late afternoon was spent in Grafham with a walk to the lake and All Saints Church. Hopefully the wind will abate tomorrow as we head out on the bikes.
Sun. May 6 2018
What a five days that was!!
Thanks to the crew for a wonderful time. Great company and a lot of laughs. Highlights included Achensee Railway and Lake Cruise; Krimml Waterfalls; Seefeld and the Innsbruck Nordkette Cable Car.
Time for some shut eye!!
Weds. May 2 2018
Off to Weer in Austria today with the Alpine Club troop via Heath Row and Innsbruck.
E is holding the fort back in the UK with plans for Aldeburgh and the Thorpeness half marathon at the weekend.
Prost!!
Sat. April 28 2018
There was an ironic touch of “Murphy” today as we awoke to wall-to-wall sunshine. It had to be travel day didn’t it!
We were on the road by 10 am deciding to try our luck with the southbound M6 and were not disappointed. There were no delays on route today and we made it back to Hunter Towers in just over six hours.
The earlier sunshine in the north west gave way to rain from Birmingham eastwards but such is life.
On a positive note, the dramatic events we witnessed in Keswick during the week had a “happy ending” for the young woman involved.
See http://keswickmrt.org.uk/low-briery-38/
It’s incredible to think that it took eleven rescuers some 90 minutes to complete her rescue. Well done guys!
Fri. April 27 2018
It has to be said that the public transport here in the Lake District is very good and we once again used the opportunity to board the bus heading first to Coniston.
The village and its vast lake still bear the scars of Donald Campbell’s death in 1967 as he tried to improve his already established world record on Coniston Water. A fitting memorial is situated centrally with the Bluebird Cafe directly facing the lake.
In comparison Windemere is hugh. The one hour bus journey from Coniston proved very interesting giving great views of the surrounding countryside. We walked the mile and a half to the lakeside in Windermere in double quick time and had just about enough time to eat our first ice cream of the week before catching the bus back to the site.
Tomorrow is travel day.
Thurs. April 26 2018
The bus passes made an appearance today as we spent the morning discovering Ambleside and Lake Windermere. Then it was off to Grasmere in the afternoon.
Ambleside on a grey, relatively cold, damp day was not at its best and in comparison with Keswick, lifeless too.
Grasmere, on the other hand was a lot better. The village looked immaculate with the “hosts of golden daffodils” providing a fitting background to William Wordsworth’s grave in the local churchyard. The cream tea in one of the local cafes was well worth waiting for.
Coniston and Windermere tomorrow.
Wed. April 25 2018
Today was “travel day” and after a relaxing morning we made our move to Skelwith Fold at around midday.
The short “hop” to Ambleside was achieved with a stop-over along the way and after setting up did a quick “look see” to find a suitable public transport route for tomorrow.
The sun made a very welcome appearance late this afternoon and we we actually able to give the Captain’s Chairs an outing!
Tue. April 24 2018
The day started out like most of the previous days on tour.
A quick look at the skies persuaded us that a circular bike tour along the Old Railway line to the east of Keswick and back was possible before the forecast rain arrived.
What we hadn’t reckoned with was that on the way we would stumble on a dramatic dangerous situation for a lady who had somehow become “stuck” some 50m down a gorge with the fast flowing River Derwent below.
The photo below was taken by yours truly without knowing what it contained! We had stopped on the bridge over the Derwent and it was only after speaking to others that we realised the poor woman’s predicament.
The second close up shot shows a dog in the upper right corner and we can only speculate how the woman got there. The chances are that she went to help her dog and then fell.
The mountain rescue team arrived as we made our way back to Keswick and as yet we do not know how the situation was resolved.
All-in-all, we manged a respectable 15 km before visiting the Derwent Pencil Museum in the afternoon to learn all about the production of graphite pencils in this area since the 18th Century. The story of the production of pencils with secret maps and compasses for aircrew/SOE agents during WW2 was a highlight!
We are off to town again this evening and it’s moving day tomorrow as we head south a few miles to Ambleside.
Mon. April 23 2018
Rain had been forecast for last night but it was still quite a shock to the system to be woken by the sound of what seemed like heavy stones dropping from above. The rain. together with the accompanying strong winds ensured an interesting night! No wonder yours truly had doubts about venturing onto Derwent Water.
A damp early morning gave way to an overcast but rain free sky as we ventured out to the landing stage ready for our boat outing and subsequent walk back to Keswick. The trip provided a good opportunity for some close-up photos of the fells, in particular Catbells (see latest photos).
A late lunch was followed by a relaxing afternoon and it looks like we will be hitting the town later as we seek an evening watering hole! It’s raining as I write and it remains to be seen if we get wet but we have all the right gear (and no idea)!!
Sun. April 22 2018
It was an early start today with the alarm going off at 04.20am. We were on the road at 05.45 and some seven hours later touched down in Keswick after a very pleasant Sunday drive north via the A1 and A66.
The site here (Camping and Caravan Club) is top drawer and with a pitch some 50m from Derwent Water what could be better?
The overcast conditions on arrival gave way to sunny periods during the afternoon which prompted an exploratory walk around Keswick followed by a meal and sampling of the local brew in the “Dog and Gun”. A good first day with a trip on Derwent Water and walk planned for tomorrow.
Sat. March 24 2018
The overnight rain duly arrived as predicted giving way to a cloudy day from the south coast into East Anglia.
The trip was again a four hour effort which prompts me to once again seriously revamp the whole journey timing strategy having spent over an hour trying to get from Junction 3 to Junction 1 on the M25. This road is a true nightmare with the A2 intersection the worst part. Two motorways into one equals, as my German friends would say – STAU!
My second “rant” of the day concerns the state of the vast majority of the roads that we used in the last few days. Other drivers must have thought I was undergoing slalom training in a Motorhome as I tried to miss the thousands of potholes that now adorn our minor and major routes! At one point on the A12 a loudspeaker cover on the dashboard was sent into orbit as Detlef was ambushed by a series of cleverly placed potholes in sequence. No wonder thousands of motorists face huge repair bills when the roads are in such a poor state of repair.
OK. Rant over. Detlef goes for inspection on the 26 March. Let’s hope the issues identified this week can get sorted and fixed.
Fri. March 23 2018
The walking boots came out today and after a damp start to the day the weather improved dramatically as we set off for our stroll over the Downs.
On leaving the site we quickly tackled the climb to the East Brighton Golf Club on top of the Downs managing to avoid low flying golf balls in the process! It wasn’t long before we caught site of Roedean School in the distance and made our way slowly towards this impressive landmark. We assume that today was the last day of term judging by the constant stream of taxis coming and going.
The Marina is another gem in Brighton’s crown and it’s lively atmosphere was immediately apparent as we watched the world go by for an hour or so from the sanctuary of a water-side cafe.
Then it was over. We returned to the site and were amazed that we had clocked up a 10 km walk. Time to chill now before contemplating tomorrow’s return journey back to Home Base.

The morning saw a few “housekeeping” issues that needed attention the most frustrating being the water system that still has an apparent air-lock despite being “bled” and refilled for a second time after the winter hibernation. Hopefully the inspection next week will provide a solution!
The bus passes once again proved invaluable as we ventured into the city centre for a stroll followed by a late lunch. The Royal Pavilion and The Lanes were heaving with young language students all speaking their own languages!! So much for learning English!
Although we had been to Brighton in the past we were surprised by the number of Jewelers in The Lanes area. How they all manage to survive is a mystery!
Walking on the Downs is planned for Friday. Let’s hope the weather plays ball.
Weds. March 21 2018
The 2018 motorhome travel season finally got underway today after several previous aborted attempts in January and February due to poor weather.
There was yet another frost evident as we set off at 07.30 en route to Brighton. The over-night heating in Detlef certainly did the trick and we were able to get away without any scraping etc. Local routes around the village are the subject of on-going closure for 2018 as a new water main is installed and so it proved today with a detour for the first seven miles!
The journey to Brighton took four hours with heavy traffic most of the time and the inevitable delays due to accidents.
The site here is large and surprisingly busy for the time of year. We were all done and dusted setting up by 1.00 pm and spent the afternoon on the bikes managing a respectable 20 km from Roedean School/Brighton Marina to Hove and back.
One or two unexpected “over-winter” problems with Detlef have surfaced during the day. It’s fortunate that he’s booked in for an annual check next week!
Sun. Feb 04 2018 to Sun. Feb 11 2018
The Hunters left Detlef at Hunter Towers and jetted off to the Costa Del Sol for some much needed sunshine.
A good week was had with some fine entertainment from our two travelling companions L and M. Trips out in the hire car punctuated the week whether it was along the coast road or more inland in the mountains. We were fortunate that L and M had already visited the area in December 2017 and were able to show us the secluded bays and mountain villages with their typically Spanish cafes and restaurants.
Visits to the “Forgotten Village” near Frigiliana and the Caves at Nerja were memorable, the former allowing M to display his off road skills in the hire car.
Needless to say, our waistlines have expanded and a period of self control is now called for!
